Adventure stories have a special way of making children feel as if they are part of the action. A character may face a storm, enter an unfamiliar place, meet a stranger, or find themselves in a situation they never expected. As children follow the story, they begin to wonder what they would do if they were in the same situation. This is one of the reasons adventure stories can be such a wonderful way to introduce children to the idea of courage. In The Great Adventure of Sleepy Joe, I wanted Joey’s journey to show that courage is not about being fearless. Joey is a young boy who finds himself facing one unexpected situation after another, and although he does not always know what will happen next, he continues moving forward. His adventure gives children a chance to see courage in a way that feels exciting and easy to understand.
Courage Does Not Mean You Are Never Scared
One of the most important things I wanted to show through Joey is that being brave does not mean that you never feel afraid. Joey is caught in a powerful storm while he and Riley are in their tree house. The rain becomes heavy, the water rises, and getting back to the farmhouse is too dangerous.
For a child, this is an easy situation to imagine. Being stuck somewhere during a storm can feel frightening, especially when you do not know what is going to happen next. Joey does not have all the answers, but he listens when Captain Jack offers help and makes the decision to continue with him.
Through moments like this, children can begin to understand that courage can mean staying calm enough to make a choice even when something feels scary.
Trying Something New Takes Courage
Joey’s adventure begins in a completely new place. His family has moved from the railroad side of town to the countryside, and Joey is surrounded by things he has never seen before. There is a farmhouse, a stream, a tree house, old train tracks, a bridge, and a tunnel.
Instead of allowing the unfamiliar surroundings to stop him, Joey becomes curious. That curiosity eventually leads him into an adventure much bigger than he could have imagined.
I think this is an important part of courage because children face new situations all the time. Starting at a new school, meeting new people, trying a new activity, or visiting a new place can all feel uncomfortable. Children can learn from Joey that it is okay to feel unsure when something is new. Sometimes the best thing we can do is take that first step.
Courage Can Grow During a Journey
Joey does not suddenly become fearless at the beginning of the story. His confidence grows as his adventure continues. At first, he is simply trying to find his way home with Riley. Then he finds himself on the Black Duck with Captain Jack, traveling through rough waters. Later, he enters a mysterious island and meets talking animals. He eventually comes face-to-face with pirates and continues his journey even when things become difficult. Each experience gives Joey another chance to handle something unfamiliar. I wanted his journey to show children that courage can grow over time. We do not have to be brave enough to handle everything at once. Sometimes we become stronger because we successfully get through one difficult moment and then discover that we can handle the next one too.
Having a Friend Can Make Difficult Moments Easier
Joey does not face his adventure alone. Riley, his loyal puppy and trusted sidekick, stays with him throughout much of the journey. Having someone beside us can make a frightening situation feel less overwhelming. For Joey, Riley is a familiar and comforting presence while everything around him keeps changing. This is something children can understand from their own lives. A child may feel nervous walking into a new classroom, but having a friend nearby can make the experience easier. The same can be true when trying something new or facing a problem. Joey and Riley’s friendship shows that courage does not always mean standing alone. Sometimes being brave means moving forward with someone you trust beside you.
Asking for Help Is Also Brave
Captain Jack plays an important role in Joey’s adventure because he helps Joey and Riley when they are in danger. Joey does not pretend that he can solve everything by himself. When Captain Jack calls out and offers help, Joey accepts it. I believe this is another valuable lesson for children. Asking for help does not make someone weak. In many situations, knowing when to ask for help is actually a brave and sensible choice. Children can learn that they do not have to solve every problem on their own. Parents, teachers, friends, and other trusted people can help when something feels too difficult or frightening.
Courage Helps Us Keep Going
One of the strongest examples of courage in Joey’s story is his willingness to continue even when his journey becomes complicated. His original goal is to find Riley’s lost toy, but the search takes him much farther than he expected. There are storms, rough waters, an unfamiliar island, pirates, and a strange train journey. Even with all these surprises, Joey continues trying to find his way. For me, this is what makes his adventure meaningful. Courage is not always one big heroic moment. Sometimes courage is simply deciding to keep going when things do not turn out the way we expected.
Adventure Stories Give Children a Safe Way to Explore Fear
Children cannot experience every situation in real life, and they do not need to. Books can give them a safe place to explore feelings such as fear, excitement, uncertainty, and courage. When children read about Joey facing a storm or meeting pirates, they can imagine how they might feel without actually being in danger. They can think about Joey’s choices and decide what they might do themselves. This can make story time more than just entertainment. It can give children a chance to talk about their own fears and the things that make them feel brave.
