Children often learn important lessons through stories without even realizing they are learning. When I wrote The Great Adventure of Sleepy Joe, I wanted to create an adventure that children could simply enjoy while also finding small lessons throughout the story. Joey begins his journey as a young boy who has just moved to a new home with his family and his puppy, Riley. He does not know that a missing toy will lead him into a world filled with storms, talking animals, pirates, ships, trains, and unexpected friends. Along the way, Joey experiences many things that children can relate to in their own lives.
Being Curious Can Lead to New Experiences
When Joey arrives at his new farmhouse, everything feels different from what he has known before. There is a stream running through the yard, a tree house, old train tracks, a bridge, and a tunnel in the distance. Instead of simply ignoring these new things, Joey becomes curious about his surroundings and starts taking in this whole new world.
I wanted Joey’s curiosity to be an important part of his character because children naturally want to explore and discover things. When we give children the freedom to ask questions and use their imagination, they can find excitement in places that may seem ordinary to adults. Joey’s curiosity is one of the things that opens the door to his great adventure.
Courage Does Not Mean Never Being Afraid
Joey faces plenty of moments that could make anyone nervous. He and Riley are caught in a dangerous storm, their tree house is swept away, and they find themselves traveling with Captain Jack on a mysterious ship. Later, Joey encounters pirates and unfamiliar people as his journey continues.
Even though Joey does not always know what is going to happen next, he keeps going. To me, this is an important message for children because being brave does not mean that we never feel afraid. Sometimes courage means being willing to take the next step when we are unsure of what is waiting ahead. Joey’s adventure gives children a chance to see that fear does not always have to stop us from trying something new.
Friendship Means Caring About Others
At the heart of Joey’s adventure is his friendship with Riley. Riley is not simply a pet who happens to be along for the ride. He is Joey’s trusted sidekick, and Joey cares deeply about him.
When Riley loses his favorite toy, Joey notices how unhappy his puppy becomes. Instead of telling Riley to forget about it, Joey makes an effort to find the missing toy. What starts as a small search becomes a huge adventure, but Joey never stops caring about why the journey began.
I hope children see something familiar in this relationship. A good friend pays attention when someone they care about is unhappy and tries to help. Joey’s relationship with Riley shows that friendship can be found in many forms, including the special bond between a child and a pet.
We Can Accept Help From Others
Joey’s journey would be very different if he tried to do everything by himself. Along the way, he meets several characters who help him continue his adventure. Captain Jack rescues Joey and Riley during the storm, while Bandit the raccoon gives them directions. Mr. Wiggles helps them choose the right path, and Red the bear provides supplies and gives Joey a talking parrot that becomes an important part of their journey.
I included these characters to show children that it is okay to accept help when we need it. We all need someone to point us in the right direction sometimes. Just as Joey receives help from others, children can also learn that helping someone else can make a big difference.
Don’t Give Up When Something Matters
Joey’s reason for starting his journey is simple. He wants to find Riley’s lost toy, and he continues looking even when the search becomes much more difficult than he expected. His adventure takes him far away from home and puts him in situations he could never have planned. Still, he keeps moving forward. I wanted this part of the story to remind children that reaching a goal does not always happen quickly or easily. Sometimes we have to keep trying, even when the path changes along the way. The important thing is not to give up on something that matters to us.
Imagination Can Turn an Ordinary Day Into an Adventure
One of the things I enjoyed most about creating Joey’s story was allowing ordinary things to become extraordinary. A storm leads Joey to Captain Jack and the Black Duck. A journey through the jungle introduces him to animals that can talk. Pirates become part of his adventure, and later he finds himself riding an old train.
These moments give children plenty of room to use their own imagination. I believe that imagination is an important part of childhood because it allows children to look at the world in new ways. A tree house can become a secret hideout, an old train can become part of an exciting journey, and a simple search for a lost toy can become a story worth remembering.
The Journey Can Be Just as Important as the Destination
Joey starts with one simple goal, but along the way he experiences much more than he could have imagined. He meets new friends, faces unexpected challenges, and discovers places that are completely different from home. This is one of the ideas I wanted children to take from the story. Sometimes we become so focused on reaching the end that we forget to enjoy everything that happens along the way. Joey’s adventure reminds us that the people we meet, the things we discover, and the experiences we have can become just as meaningful as the goal we started with.
A Story to Enjoy and Talk About Together
I hope The Great Adventure of Sleepy Joe gives families and classrooms more than a fun story to read. It can also give parents and teachers a chance to talk with children about the choices Joey makes and the things he experiences.
